What is Internal Family Systems?

Internal Family Systems Therapy IFS in Bergen County

Do you ever hear yourself saying, "There's a part of me that feels... but then there’s another part of me that feels...."?  Most of us speak this way without even thinking about it—we intuitively know that we have different parts of ourselves, and we’ve experienced what it’s like when those parts either work together or pull in opposite directions.

When our parts are aligned, they tend to operate quietly in the background, helping us navigate life smoothly. But when those parts have competing needs, goals, or beliefs—and can’t find common ground—we can feel stuck, overwhelmed, or confused. This inner tension often shows up as emotional distress, repeated patterns we can’t seem to break, or a sense of being at odds with ourselves and with others.

Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy offers a gentle, evidence-based way to explore and heal these internal dynamics. It’s based on the idea that our minds are made up of many different “parts,” each with its own thoughts, feelings, and protective roles. Some parts are trying to keep us safe, while others may carry emotional pain or trauma from the past.

Rather than trying to get rid of these challenging parts, IFS helps us understand them with curiosity and compassion. At the heart of this work is the belief that we each have a core Self—a calm, confident, and compassionate inner presence that can lead the healing process.  When we connect to this Self, we can begin to build trusting relationships with our parts, help them heal, and release the burdens they’ve been carrying.

The goal of IFS is greater inner harmony, emotional resilience, and the freedom to live from a place of clarity, courage, and self-leadership.
